Visit of Paestum

Paestum is an ancient city of Magna Grecia called by the founders Poseidonia in honor of Poseidon, but most devoted to Hera and Athena. The extension of his town is still clearly recognizable, enclosed by its Greek walls, as amended in Luke and Roman. In the past it was known as Pesto.
The rediscovery of Paestum, which had been only a vague memory, is due to the construction of the road, built by Charles of Bourbon in 1762, which still goes to the archaeological site and that bisects the amphitheater. It soon became famous: an expedition to the marshy plain of the Sele was in fact an obligatory stop on the Grand Tour.

Paestum is surrounded by walls almost completely preserved, with a polygonal perimeter that stretches for about 4.75 km, following the trend of travertine bench on which the city stands. It consists of a double curtain wall of large square blocks, the center filled with earth and interspersed with 28 square towers and circular, of which almost all are destroyed or converted into ruderi.In the cardinal points open four doors principal of accesso.Miracolosamente arrived in excellent condition, as to be considered unique examples of Magna Greek, are the three Doric temples built in the two sanctuaries urban areas of Paestum, respectively dedicated to Hera and Athena.

More or less preserved to look however carefully the Sacred Way, the Forum, the Amphitheatre and the Necropolis.
